Once in a while, I will be in public and throw a deep question at a stranger, typically in an exchange with a retail worker when I am making a purchase. This time I was at our local Best Buy and asked the worker helping me " What do you think our biggest problem with humanity is "?. In effect, he stated ' Everyone is searching for something and they don't know what it is. I paused for a moment. I thanked him. I said I think it's greed. I also said I am part of the problem too sometimes, but I am 100% convinced it is greed. I thought about how I behave when I am living in fear. I want to spend money sometimes for comfort or gather all these things around me. But it never resolves the fear. This Greed is for control, power, wealth, materials, security, and so on. Later that day I was able to reflect a bit more and thought again that one of our issues is also needing to be certain. This idea of the destination and outcome, reaching. a goal. There are many perspectives to go about this discussion. But when I critically think about this, we all know, that Greed is designed in our systems to help with this idea of having an outcome or end game to help us with our human uncertainty.
Personally, when I was early in my recovery from my childhood trauma, I attended many CBT-oriented group therapy sessions. The greatest lessons and tools I learned over a [period of 2 years was understanding uncertainty and really how much it impacts every layer of my life. A phrase comes to mind "We can plan things, but we can't plan the outcome" The real task along with adapting to uncertainty or fear of the unknown is finding how can tolerate that discomfort. Simple right? Our humanity has always been unable to be in a place of discomfort and it's quite natural we need to survive, have freedom, and celebrate our transformations. Yet when we have built systems that are designed to shape and teach us that goals and outcomes are more important than our search and journey. That is where we continue to dig our pits of despair and isolation. Greed is designed to hold us back into this state . We can see the costs.
Now more than ever we need great thinkers, philosophers, artists and creatives, authors, writers in film and television, journalism, and brave people to question authority and systems and not be silenced. This part of humanity helps us to reflect on the benefits of how valuable it is to just appreciate the searching aspects of our humanity. It brings equality to humanity to know we are all searching and be comfortable with whatever outcome is there. Because we are satisfied that our search has meaning.
I see us all on a boat sailing into the unknown. And that is great!
If you are uncertain and lost, you are in a great place
If you are confused and discouraged, what a gift it is to be at that place.
Acknowledge the change in humanity, and practice selflessness as best you can.
Gain humility and laugh
